Every single one of them wants more web site traffic!

The problem is, most of them rely on getting their web site traffic from search engines. And that can be a big mistake. Actually, five huge mistakes.

Relying on the Search Engines to Automatically Send

First, keeping track of what the search engines want to see on your site is extremely difficult. One day, it might be lots of targeted keywords. The next day, it might be something else entirely.

Unless you use a search engine optimization program like SEO Elite or manually track what each of the search engines are looking for on a daily basis, then you won't know how to get your web site to rank well with each of the major search engines.

Second, every search engine uses different things to come up with their rankings. If Google gives a higher ranking for having one factor... then another search engine might ignore or even penalize your web site for having it!

Third, when most people use a search engine to do a search, they won't look past the first page of listings. If they are highly motivated to find what they are looking for, then they might look through two or three pages of listings.

But that's rare.

So unless your web site has a keyword that scores well with a search engine, then it can be very difficult to get listed on the first page.

Fourth, every competitor of yours is also vying for the first page of the search engines. And they are trying to make it for the same keywords that you do.

If you want to rank higher than your competitors than you have to prove that your site is more "worthy" and deserves to be ranked higher. (I'll explain in a few minutes how to become more "worthy".)

Fifth, most website owners think that search engines are their friends.

Not true.

Search engines are friendly to their customers — who are using their search engine. In fact, search engines value their own customers so much that any website which doesn't provide useful information... could find themselves falling in rank — or be dropped from the search engine completely!

Here's Some Even Worse News — Search Engines Aren't
the Only Traffic Source Going Through Some Big Changes!

If the threat of search engine traffic drying up was the only problem that marketers were facing, it wouldn't be nearly as bad. Some marketers would make changes to their business so their websites stayed in the good graces of the search engines and continue to get lots of targeted traffic.

Others might struggle for a while, but they would start looking for other traffic sources to draw from.

The problem is... search engines aren't the only traffic source starting to dry up. Some of the others have gotten worse! Here's what I mean...


Pay Per Click: As a general rule, the higher your ad lists in a search engine like Google, the more prospects will see your ad and be sent to your site. Unfortunately, the business with the biggest budget can out-bid everyone else and get the top ranking spot in any pay per click engine.

Let me give you an example.

I'll go to Google and type in the phrase "antique lamps". Now I'll take a look at the top five advertisers. One of them is a multi-billion dollar company called Ebay. Another is Shop.com which is a huge e-commerce website. As a small business owner how can you get top position in a pay-per-click engine when you are competing against billion dollar companies?

The bad news, you can't.


Free for all (FFA): These web sites allow you to set up a link that points to your web site. There's no charge for this service and many times you can post your link using automated software.

Unfortunately, the links on FFA sites are usually not organized in any way. They're just endless lists of unrelated web sites.

The major search engines like Yahoo, Google, or MSN aren't sure where to categorized each link they find on a FFA site, so they will classify the whole site as "spam". The end result is punishing any web site that appears on the FFA site with lower rankings.


Reciprocal links: Here's another free strategy that many webmasters use. One way to attract more traffic is to trade links with another web site. If both web sites trade links with each other, then it is referred to as a reciprocal link.

If the one web site is linked to another, but does not have a link pointing to it in return, then it's known as a non-reciprocal link.

Does it matter, which type of the links you have on your site?

You bet!

If you have too many reciprocal links, then search engines may penalize your site. That's because they feel you just traded links with a lot of other web sites — just to create more incoming web links.

The problem is, no one seems to know how many reciprocal links are too many... and the search engines aren't telling!

How about article submission?

Don't get me wrong — article submission can work very well... but there are two big IF's. IF you enjoy writing articles... IF you know where to submit them... then articles can create additional links pointing to your website. Search engines like seeing useful content that refers to another website, so you could see an increase in web traffic for your efforts.

What about submitting your website manually to each search engine?

You can take the time to submit your web site to every search engine that is available. There are hundreds to choose from and you would spend hours and hours manually filling out submission forms for each search engine.

Of course, it can take up to six months for your web site to show up in a search engine's listings after you have submitted it.

Let's face it: You can't afford to wait six months for the search engines to get around to sending your site some traffic. If your web site is going to make some sales, then you need web site traffic as quickly as possible!

It's no wonder so many Internet Marketers are scrambling to find new traffic sources — they need to find anything that might bring them more traffic...

Some marketers have even tried things like:

  • Advertising on eBay...
  • Creating a screen profile on social sites like MySpace...
